Americans use 100 million plastic bags a year or roughly 1,500 bags per household a year. According to Waste Management, only 1 percent of plastic bags are returned for recycling. Rest either end up in landfill or in the sea. It takes 500 years or more for plastic to degrade in a landfill. Even when degraded they continue to pollute the environment.
